Today we celebrate the 58th Birthday of former Bollywood Damsel Neetu Singh.

Notwithstanding these secondary labels associated with her we shouldn’t forget that she was once one of the most sought after heroines and topmost star of the 70s era. Her Star image of the 70s is much more credible yet her Biwi/Bahu/Maa role in the later years in real life somehow overpowered her former glory. [ Read: KRK Again Engages In A Stardom Fight. She became a leading lady at the tender age of 13 in the disastrous “Rickshawala” in 1972. It was her effervescent and vivacious cameo in Nasir Hussain’s musical drama Yaadon Ki Baraat that made film makers take notice of this energetic and impressive teenager. Thereafter there was no looking back for this talented Punjabi beauty. She appeared in a string of hits throughout the 70s like Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khel Khel Mein, Jhootha Kahin Ka and many others. Most often cast in multi starring films Neetu Singh didn’t really get an opportunity to showcase her acting histrionics. Basu Chatterji cast her in an author backed role in Priyatama where she played the role of a young girl from an affluent background who marries a middle class guy and faces marital discord. Unfortunately her sensitive act was ignored in the movie. She was a favourite with King of romance Yash Chopra and appeared in his movies like Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie and Kaala Paththar. She was nominated in the Filmfare Best Supporting actress category for her feisty and fiery act in Kaala Paththar in 1979. In the period 1975 to 1979 she was amongst the highest paid heroines and confidently placed in the Top 5 actresses of that period.
At the peak of her career and at a very young age of 21 she quit Bollywood to marry her beloved Rishi Kapoor. She remained away from the limelight after her marriage and rarely appeared in any spotlight and whenever she did it was representation as a Kapoor Bahu. After years of hiatus she returned back to acting impressing the viewers with her natural and cheerful performances in the movies Do Dooni Char, Besharam and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
In her heydays as a Bollywood heroine she was known as a chirpy , ever smiling and highly cooperative star. She shared great camaraderie with Co stars like Jeetendra, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha and Rakesh Roshan. Today she symbolizes a Woman of Substance. Someone who worked hard right from the age of 7 till 21 as a Bollywood star for the outer world and a Bread Earner for her immediate family. Someone who cut short her rising career to marry her lover and later raise her two children. Someone who has lived her life with Grace, dignity and lived it to the fullest.
