From Free Meal to Free Condom – Letter to my Son

From Free Meal to Free Condom – Letter to my Son

Dear Son,

Hope you are having fun. I saw this poster in one of the restrooms in your University which says FREE Condom available

From Free Meal to Free Condom- Father Letter to Son

I studied in a school that gave us free books and free meals. And you have joined a college where books and meals cost a bomb but Condoms are free.

I can’t say that I was very comfortable with this. At the same time, I felt good that atleast something is being given free. I had to resist the temptation of asking you if you can get few free packets for me J . You see, we love free stuff (Economists call it subsidy)

Ok, let me come to the point. Your mother has been asking me if I have already spoken to you about Sex and Safety. She insists that it’s my responsibility to teach you about Safe Sex. I must admit that this is probably one of the most difficult assignments for me so far. I have trained many people in Six Sigma and many other professional skills. But training on Sex…

I am reminded of a Santa Singh Joke which goes like this –

Santa goes to a Doc to know how to do family planning. The Doctor takes out a pack of condom and says use this. Santa looks at the pack and says he does not know how to use it. So the Doctor puts one on his thumb to show. Santa goes home happily after seeing the demo. Couple of months later, Santa comes to the Doctor again and accuses him that family planning is not working. Doctor is surprised and asks Santa if he is using the Condom. Santa almost screams saying Yes, every night he puts on a condom on his THUMB as shown by the Doctor.

So let me not try to train you. Instead let me share my perspectives.

  1. Once upon time, I was your age. I know that curiosity about girls and sex could be very consuming. We had college mates for whom it was a competitive sport of how many medals (girls) can they win. We also had few mates who used to TRY very hard to impress girls and more often than not fail.

The curiosity is normal and nothing to be worried about. I am sure you will meet your girl(s) if not met already. And you will experience (if not experienced already) one of the most beautiful experiences that life has to offer.

You are smart and handsome. So I guess you won’t have to try hard. In any case, trying hard in this department won’t pay off.

  1. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So I encourage you to go out and have fun. It’s important. However, don’t let it consume you. Don’t make it a competitive sport either. The joy of physical intimacy is many times more when there is meeting of minds first.
  1. When I was young, I used to gym a lot. And my focus was always on bi-cep and six packs. Why? Because I used to believe that bi-ceps and six packs would impress the ladies. Now I know women ( even the younger ones ) prefer a sensitive and caring man with sense of humor over buffy bundle of muscles . Your mom would too agree with me on this.

A fit body is an added bonus. On the fitness side, focusing on building stamina, strength and endurance besides bi-cep and six packs will pay rich dividends for years to come.

  1. Be Responsible. I know it’s difficult to be responsible when passion takes over. Please remember, the consequence of not being responsible may have serious health risks for you and consequences for your partner. I am sure you would not want it .

Please use the Condom (not on the Thumb like Santa did) .

Its free anyway !!

May you be happy, may you be healthy and may you stay protected.
