Haunted Painting : The Hands Resist Him
Haunted Painting? Yes, not all ghosts limit themselves to traditional burying grounds. No, they don’t, seems like some love to haunt paintings instead of people. Yes, seems like the paintings are not an exemption. Some spirits seems to prefer possessing objects like paintings rather than living humans. From haunted chair to walking stick, there are several objects that were reported to be haunted by spirits. In this article we can read about an extra creepy haunted painting.
The Hands Resist Him:
“The Hands Resist Him” is one of the famous works of Bill Stoneham which gained much popularity as a possessed art. This painting (possessed art) is also known by another name “eBay Haunted Painting” (google this term once you have read this article). This painting is considered as one of the world’s most haunted art and there are several stories to support the cause.
As you could see in the picture, this painting futures a young boy and a creepy looking doll. Try staring at the doll for a while. The artist Bill Stoneham has proclaimed that this painting is an homage to a photo taken of him when he was a child. Yes, the artist said the boy in the painting is based on a photograph of himself at age 5. You could notice a door right behind the boy and dool, Stoneham has said that the doorway shown in the painting is a representation of the dividing line between the waking world and the world of impossibilities. Did he meant that the doorway was the portal between human realm and spiritual realm? maybe, maybe not.
Stoneham further said that the title “The Hands Resist Him” was taken from a poem that was written by his wife. Stoneham also said that he completed darwing the painting in the year 1947. What about the doll? Well he said something about the doll too, Bill said that the doll is a guide that will escort the boy through the doorway to another world. And the hand prints in the painting represent alternate lives (spirits?).
This painting went viral and also became the subject of an urban legend when it was auctioned on eBay. The reason it went viral is due to several backstory’s mentioned along with the eBay post. Those stories implied that the painting was haunted. Some of the famous stories related to this painting are listed below.
Something strange started happening within a few years of its(painting’s) completion. Three men closely associated with the painting including passed away. One among the three was Godfather actor John Marley. Second one was the person who purchased this painting first. And also the gallery owner who contracted the painting was dead.
Next to own this creepy haunted painting was a couple from California. Very shortly the couple began to report several creepy things about the painting. Such as the figures in the painting moving around at night (really? they still lived in the same house after witnessing the figures moving), and even disappearing from the picture. Well, that’s not all. The couple also had repeated dreams as if the boy coming out of the painting (I won’t call it as a dream, that’s a nightmare). This couple wasn’t the only humans scared by this painting, several small kids started to cry once they were near the painting (why would kids cry seeing at a picture of a young boy and doll? It’s because the painting is haunted douh). Also, several other people have reported feeling like they were tickled when they turn their back on the painting (I wouldn’t go anywhere near it, it’s not because I am ticklish).
It was in February 2000 the painting was auctioned in eBay(that’s like 16 years back) by another family who got the painting from the Californian family. And they did add some creepy back story too.
“AT THE TIME WE WONDERED A LITTLE WHY A SEEMINGLY PERFECTLY FINE PAINTING WOULD BE DISCARDED LIKE THAT. ( TODAY WE DON’T!!!! ) ONE MORNING OUR 4 AND 1/2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CLAIMED, THAT THE CHILDREN IN THE PICTURE WERE FIGHTING, AND COMING INTO THE ROOM DURING THE NIGHT.”
An art gallery in Grand Rapids, MI purchased the painting for just over $1,000 and eventually the gallery tracked down Bill Stoneham, the orinial artist. The artist Bill Stoneham was surprised to hear multiple haunted and spooky stories about his famous work. Well, things didn’t stop there, the gallery owner who purchased the painting “The Hands Resist Him,” and displayed it passed away within a year. And also the Los Angeles Times art critic who reviewed the painting died within a year of viewing the painting. Stoneham says the strange incidents happening around the paintings are just coincidence and has since painted two sequel works, “Resistance at the Threshold” and “Threshold of Revolution.”
Even people who viewed it online has reported feeling sick and disturbed after looking at it. Google it up and let us know in comments how you feel, does it look haunted?
