Kerala’s Kozhikode Sets Up India’s First Grievance Redressal Cell For LGBT Community
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Kozhikode district in Kerala under the guidance of it’s District Collector has just launched a first-of-its-kind redressal committee against harassment of the LGBT Community in Kozhikode. Yes, Kozhikode takes the lead in this first-of-its-kind initiative addressing against harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
The committee will be chaired by the district collector N Prasanth and the committee is also comprised of city police commissioner, SP (Kozhikode rural), sub-judge from district legal services authority , Kozhikode subcollector, district medical officer, social justice officer, deputy director of education and two representatives from the LGBT community. Reports The Times Of India.
On August 12, Kozhikode saw its sixth edition of the Kerala Queer Pride march. And during this Queer march the LGBT community faced lots of harassment which made them to write an open letter to the Kozhikode district collector, N Prasanth. This open letter could be the reason behind this unprecedented move.
“We have been receiving several complaints from the community members about the violence, abuse, ill-treatment and restricted access to public spaces, education and healthcare from the members of the community. We felt that this is one of the vulnerable groups who hardly have any forum to get their grievances addressed. This is the reason why we decided to set up the committee.” said Kozhikode district collector, N Prasanth.
