Muslim Woman In US Awarded $85k Settlement
A Muslim woman named Kirsty Powell, who filed a lawsuit in April 2016, alleging that the police department forcibly removed her hijab, has won $85,000 as settlement by authorities. As per the lawsuit, Kirsty Powell and her husband were pulled over by police for driving a “low rider” car. And police found a warrant against Kirsty Powell for a shoplifting incident and so she was arrested, reported CNN.
Powell’s husband who was present during the arrest requested the arresting officers for a female officer to handle Powell’s arrest, but his request was turned down. And the officers made Powell to remove her hijab and she had to spend the whole night in prison without her headscarf.
As mentioned in the lawsuit Powell was “forced to appear in a publicly available booking photo without her religious headwear,”. “She cried throughout the ordeal and experienced humiliation when both her religious beliefs and personal integrity were violated,” the lawsuit read.
“As a result of the foregoing deprivations of the free exercise of her religion, Powell suffered severe discomfort, humiliation, and emotional distress,” the lawsuit stated.
Powell filed the lawsuit in April 2016 and The city of Long Beach, California, will pay $85,000 to settle the lawsuit. And also the department has since changed some of its policy on religious headwear.
“I want my Muslim sisters to always feel comfortable and safe wearing a hijab and to stand up for what’s right,” said Powell to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. She further added that she wanted to be the last Muslim woman who had to go through this sort of bad experience and also she asked others to stand up for what’s right.
