Shubh Mangal Savdhan Movie Review

Shubh Mangal Savdhan : Great news, folks!! Finally finally, we have a true blue sex comedy which doesn’t depend on cleavage and vulgarity to induce laughter. No ‘Masti’ (2004) and ‘Great Grand Masti’ (2016) style low brow humour here, but still, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan guarantees you LOL moments throughout its two hours of run time. Atlast and God bless, bollywood has learnt to be cool without the ‘K’ (I mean the horribly sexist ‘Kya Kool Hai..’ series).

Shubh Mangal Savdhan Movie Review-Fantoosy

Starting with a montage of yesteryear love sagas from ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (1981) to ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ (1988), Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a love cum arranged cum love story of Mudit (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Sugandha (Bhumi Pednekar), two middle class Delhiites who try to get physical visical before taking the saat pheras.

Oh no, Problem problem!! Apna Mudit suffers from erectile dysfunction or ED or simply gents problem as he calls it. Sugandha tries to support (no pun intended) him in the best way she can and the wedding date is fixed. Unfortunately, Mudit’s l’il secret gets leaked (again, no pun intended) to aam junta including his to be in-laws and all hell breaks loose.

Adapted from a tamil hit called ‘Kalyana Samayal Saadham’ (2013), the screenplay and dialogues are the film’s biggest positive. Trust me, I haven’t laughed so much in recent times. Practically every dialogue in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan brings out guffaws from the audience.

Of the cast, Bhumi Pednekar once again, delivers a solid performance. This is a hat-trick of sorts for her after ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015) and last month’s ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ as she outshines her acting skills with every new film. Ayushmann Khurrana is also superlative as the guy who loses his confidence due to his “gents problem”. A bit ironic too, as he played Vicky who “donated” so very generously to wannabe moms not so long ago..haha!

The supporting cast is first rate with Seema Pahwa and Brijendra Kala deserving a special mention. A needless cameo by Jimmy Sheirgill can be excused!!

To sum up, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is certainly, a shubh and mangal experience for its viewers. With its laughworthy moments and a breezy pace, there is no need to be Saavdhan about it. Go, watch today..!!
