TN Government Announces Rs 2 Crore For Paralympic Gold Medallist Mariyappan

On September 9 (Friday), Mariyappan Thangavelu, a 21 year old from Tamil Nadu gained India it’s first gold medal in Rio Paralympics, in the High Jump (T42 category). Yes, Thangavelu is the first Indian para-athlete to bag a gold medal in the men’s high jump-T42 finals. Thangavelu is from Salem district of Tamil Nadu. He met with an accident at the age of five when a bus ran over his right leg that stunted it’s growth. But his physical deformity did not stop him from winning the gold from the prestigious tournament at the Olympic Stadium. He won the gold medal with his best jump of 1.89m.

To apprecaite his success, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a reward of Rs 2 crores for him. The sports Ministry has already announced on Tuesday that the gold medallists at the Paralympics will be given 75 lakh cash prize. In addition to that 75 lakhs, TN Goverment has now announced Rs. 2 cr cash reward for Mariyappan.

In a congratulatory letter, CM Jayalalithaa wrote, “I was delighted to learn that you have won a Gold Medal in the Paralympics currently being held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I understand that this is the first time an Indian has won a gold medal in the High Jump event in the Paralympics. By leaping over a height of 1.89 metres, you have leapt into history and done both the Nation and the State of Tamil Nadu proud. Your achievement, overcoming several obstacles and hurdles, will inspire more and more children and youth to overcome adversities and to participate and strive for greater achievements. Kindly accept my heartiest congratulations on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu on your splendid achievement.

I am very happy to inform you that I have decided the Government of Tamil Nadu will award you a cash prize Rs 2 crores on par with Olympic Gold winners from Tamil Nadu.

I congratulate you and all those who have contributed to your success. May you stand forth as a beacon of hope for all those striving to achieve success in their chosen fields overcoming all odds,”.

So far India has won two medals- gold and bronze.
